Senior Tunneling Geologist PG

The Civil Recruiter is currently representing a well-established engineering consulting firm that is looking to add a Professional Geologist / Senior Tunnel Engineer to support major underground infrastructure and tunneling projects in the New York City area.

This role is ideal for an experienced Professional Geologist (PG) or tunneling professional with a strong background in geotechnical engineering, subsurface investigations, and underground construction. The individual in this role will provide geological interpretation and technical support during both the design and construction phases of tunnel and shaft projects, working closely with geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, and construction teams.

The position involves evaluating subsurface conditions, identifying geological risks, and helping ensure safe and efficient construction of underground infrastructure. Candidates with experience supporting tunnel excavation, rock shaft construction, bedrock mapping, and geologic risk assessment will be particularly well suited for this opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide geological oversight and interpretation for tunnel, shaft, and underground construction projects
• Perform bedrock mapping, soil overburden characterization, and rock mass classification
• Map faults, fractures, joints, and shear zones using field observations and scanning technologies
• Evaluate groundwater conditions, seepage, and hydrogeologic impacts related to underground construction
• Prepare and review geologic logs, cross sections, subsurface investigation reports, and technical memoranda
• Provide input for geotechnical baseline reports (GBRs) and other project documentation
• Support construction teams by verifying subsurface conditions during excavation and recommending adjustments when field conditions differ from design assumptions
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, construction managers, and inspectors
• Participate in risk identification and hazard analysis related to tunneling and underground infrastructure projects

This role includes both field-based assignments and office-based technical work. Field responsibilities may include observing excavation activities, documenting exposed bedrock conditions, and supporting ongoing construction operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
• Professional Geologist (PG) license in the State of New York, or ability to obtain
• 10+ years of experience supporting geotechnical, tunneling, or underground infrastructure projects
• Experience with shaft and tunnel mapping, subsurface investigations, and geological interpretation
• Strong technical writing, analytical problem-solving, and communication skills
• Ability to collaborate across engineering, construction, and regulatory teams

Why This Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced tunnel engineer or professional geologist who enjoys working on complex underground construction and geotechnical engineering projects. The role offers the chance to contribute to significant infrastructure work while collaborating with a multidisciplinary engineering team.
